Le Passé Composé

Regular avoir verbs

The perfect tense has two parts called the auxiliary and the past participle

e.g.  il a joué  =  he played, or he has played

<!--[if !supportLists]-->-     <!--[endif]-->er verbs

The auxiliary is the present tense of the verb avoir.

To form the past participle take the infinitive of the verb, knock off the –er, then add é

e.g. jouer       → joué

So, here is a whole verb with all the parts:

J’ai joué                  Nous avons joué
Tu as joué               Vous avez joué
Il a joué                  Ils ont joué

-ir verbs

To form the past participle you knock off the  « r »

e.g. finir
       il a fini   =   he finished, he has finished

-re verbs

To form the past participle of –re verbs, you knock off the –re and add a “u”

e.g.   vendre
        nous avons vendu   =   we sold, we have sold
